Octubre 2023
The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF), in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Argentina’s Secretary of Mining organized a public discourse on the economic opportunities and challenges for Argentina related to the lithium sector.
The half-day event had over 100 participants joining in-person and online with different backgrounds and coming from various government agencies, industry, and civil society organizations.
The event began with opening remarks by GIZ, IGF, and Fundar providing context and setting the scene. Two panel discussions followed – one focused at the national level and the second on the provincial level – regarding the opportunities and challenges faced by the authorities to capture the financial benefits from the lithium sector.
The first panel had representatives from Argentina’s tax authority (Administración Federal de Ingresos Públicos), specifically from the tax administration and customs teams. They shared their concerns regarding corporate income tax and export tax administration in the lithium sector.
The second panel’s speakers came from Catamarca, Jujuy, and Salta where several lithium projects are producing or coming on stream shortly. Each shared their existing and/or emerging challenges around royalty collection and their experience with state-owned companies to realize financial benefits from the lithium sector. A lively debate ensued based on questions from the audience.
