The life cycle of a mine does not end after mineral exploitation, but rather includes the proper closure of the pit and associated facilities, as well as the long-term monitoring and maintenance of the closed components. This is also known as the post-closure stage of the mine. Currently, only two countries in the Andean Region have a specific law for mine closure, namely Chile and Peru.
MinSus promotes good practices in mine closure by evaluating existing experiences in the region and highlighting international best practices. Events, courses and technical tours are offered to representatives from the Andean Region. A guide of good practices has been developed, which takes into account the particularities of the region. This guide can serve as a valuable input to develop or adapt regulations on mine closure.
